VILLANUEVA BUILDING

This building offers the Museum´s painting collection from the 12th Century up to Goya. With regards to sculpture on display are Greco-Roman pieces up to the 18th Century.

The Dauphin´s Treasure is on display on the lower level (Planta Sótano).

The paintings exhibited on the Museum´s street level are from the Spanish Schools, from the 12th to the 16th Centuries (and also the Black Paintings by Goya), and the Flemish, German and Dutch Schools.

On the main floor you will find the rest of the paintings - from El Greco to Goya- that make up the Spanish, Italian and French School collections. There are also several sculptures on display in the various halls.

DUE TO THE REPAIRS BEING MADE TO THE ROOF OF THE MUSEUM, THE LOCATION OF THE PAINTINGS DESCRIBED ON THIS VIRTUAL VISIT MIGHT NOT CORRESPOND TO THEIR ACTUAL SITE. CLICK HERE FOR THE CURRENT POSITION OF THESE COLLECTIONS.

CASON DEL BUEN RETIRO
This building and the neighbouring Army Museum are the only architectural remains of what was the Buen Retiro Palace, built for Philip IV in the 17th Century. Much of the park that surrounded it has been preserved and hence its name "del Retiro".

At the Casón (which literaly means "big house" but was coined for the building in the last century as an allusion to its ruinous state), the Prado Museum exhibits its 19th and early 20th Centuries painting collections, along with part of its sculpture collection from the same period.

All the Exhibition Halls sited in the Casón del Buen Retiro (Alfonso XII St., 28), are closed since the 2nd of August of 1997, due to the remodelling works that are being developed at this building.
